Visual Artist

I am Namal Kumara, work as a contemporary artist in Sri Lanka. I received my primary education at Miriswatta Maha Vidyalaya in Galle. Later I learned Art as a subject from Gonagala Maha Vidyalaya in Galle. And then, I joined the Art Way Academy (2010) to improve my practical knowledge base techniques like sketching. After completion of my basic studies, I was selected to the University of the Visual and Performing Art in Colombo 7. Here, I got the opportunity to learn skills as well as the world view necessary to become a career artist. The exploration of diverse techniques, styles, philosophies, and ideologies had enabled me to understand the integral connection between technique and concept. Then, my concept was developed base on the human relationships that I experienced within my university life mixing with society. I sharpen up my knowledge of a variety of disciplines such as live painting, drawing, sketching and coloring, through theoretical and practical knowledge. After completing my university life, I held my first solo exhibition, “Ruefulness – 2018.” at Saskia Fernando Gallery in Sri Lanka. How far I have come as an artist would be my A/L Art teacher Malan Liyanage who taught Art at the Gonagala M.V. in Galle. Also, my wife, Wasantha Gunasekara, works as a contemporary artist and, her encouragement when the times got rough is appreciated. Currently, I work as a freelance artist covering both local and international contexts.
