Ana Bathe (Germany)
Visual Artist
Ana Bathe (born in Belgrade in 1987) is a multi-disciplinary autodidactic artist currently living and
working in Berlin. Drawing inspiration from various forms of art and by assuming the roles of subject,
photographer, painter, sculptor, set and costume designer in her work, the artist is able to produce
works which give her philosophies a visual body – often unconventional in form and matter.
While being irrevocably shaped by childhood experiences of war-trauma and subsequently as a refugee,
her works do incorporate these aspects but move beyond them and address societal issues like ever-
present consumerism, the conception of gender or the psychological consequences of an expanding
technologically interconnected life. Aiming to intrusively stimulate the audiences emotionally and
cognitively, the artist’s objective is to directly evoke a lasting communicative exchange.
Her work has been published and exhibited throughout Europe.
Swimming in Oceans
By Anne Bathe, Germany
The ongoing series of self-portraits Singles was started in 2013 and has so far explored various themes. Some examples include: the analysis of sexual identity through color, exploration of gender ambiguity through nudity, the ever-growing reliance on beauty products that help develop a version of ourselves which we strive to project into the world, as well as world of advertising and the way women are often objectified, judged and viewed as something to be consumed. These topics and their many nuances are the driving force and the foundation of this series.
This project continually draws inspiration from seeking the merging point of masculinity and femininity, historical movements and current issues.
By simultaneously assuming the roles of subject, photographer, make-up artist and set designer, the artist is able to give her philosophies a visual body and to create pieces that are quite intimate.
