Gloria Keh (Singapore)
Singapore
Born in 1952, the year of the dragon, Gloria Keh began painting since childhood. Her late father, the oil painter, Martin Fu, was her first teacher. Although he painted in the traditional style of the old masters, he encouraged Gloria to paint in abstraction; to be fearless in expressions and to be bold.As an adult, unable to make a living as acontemporary artist, Gloria worked as a journalist for travel trade magazines.
At the age of 42, Gloria retired from the workforce to study yoga and vedanta, and also to return to painting. She studied mandala art and symbolism in Melbourne, Australia for over 10 years and undertook a short course in art therapy at La Salle college for the arts in Singapore.
In 2008, Gloria founded Circles of Love, a non profit charity outreach programme, using her art in the service to humanity. All money from the sales of her art is donated to charities not just in Singapore but to overseas charities as well.
She has participated in over 80 exhibitions both in Singapore as well as internationally. These include events like New York Art Expo, the Shanghai Art Fair, Affordable Art Fairs in Hong Kong and Singapore, Bienal de Arte Barcelona, Spain, London Contemporary International Art Fair, Rude & Bold Women Art Show (New York), Art Basel Miami, USA. Her first overseas solo art show was at the Gallery Steiner, in Vienna, Austria. Gloria staged two solo exhibitions in Singapore.
For 2019 and 2020, Gloria served on the jury for the South Korean art festivals staged at the Haegeumgang Theme Museum, that also houses a few of her works.Awardwise, she has won 18 international art awards including the Best Modern and Contemporary Artists (2018) by EA Editore in Italy, the International Prize Caravaggio (Italy); Costanza Foundation’s International Art Award 2019 (Spain); Leonardo da Vinci Award (2020), Italy; and most recently the ATIM Top 60 Masters Award 2020, NewYork.
Angel with child, and friend
By Gloria Keh, Singapore
I love nudes and enjoy a sense of humour. I also always liked the idea of a pregnant angel. The painting shows two angels. And this takes place in paradise. One angel has a full, generous pregnant belly. She is with child. This has never happened in heaven before: and the High Council for Angelic Welfare has just adjourned. The pregnant angel has been shamed. De-haloed. Soon, she will loose her wings, and will be banished to earth to live with mere mortals. Her best friend offers comfort, knowing they will never see each other again.
Symbols of the upward and downward triangles form part of the background. The upward triangles symbolising phalluses, whilst the downward triangles represent the female sexual organs. Two lotuses on the pregnant angel represent the female yoni.
Orange and red deliberately used for the lotuses: orange, a color associated with the sacral chakra, denotes the creative sexual energy and the will to create. Red is synonymous with passion, desire and lust.
Finally, two eyes replace the nipples of the ample bosom: somebody’s watching! Now who could that be? Your guess is as good as mine.
