Umesh Shrestha, born in eastern part of the hills of Dolakha in 1975 AD, came to Kathmandu to study education to be a teacher acc. to family wishes after completing SLC. But having a deep passion for arts and unsure about the future it held, he somehow enrolled in Lalit Kala Campus after tentatively spending two years in Mahendra Ratna Campus.
He completed MFA in 2010 from Central Department of Fine Arts, Tribhuvan University, Nepal. A boy from a rural village who went against his family wishes and followed his passion was now a role model and a first generation artist in his district. Although having taken the difficult road without any supports or encouragements, he is what he is now due to his strong desire, passion and continuous hardwork in the art field. So his entry into this field has been kin of unconventional.
Mr. Shrestha won regional award in 2012 from Nepal Academy of Fine Arts(NAFA). Similarly, in 2019 received Provincial award from the Ministry for Culture and Civil Aviation. Some other achievements include representing Nepal by participating in East Europe Art Symposium, 2012 and Artist Camp and Exhibition in Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2014. Mr. Shrestha also taught in LalitKala Campus (2007 – 2010 ) being a faculty member, and also an assembly member at NAFA, Kathmandu (2015 – 2019).
Nowadays, his canvas can be seen being meditated by his philosophical quest to attain answers about who he is and why. Viewers can connect to it in a spiritual and phylosophical level.
